In Response To Dolce and Gabbana: All Families Have The Right To BE
Controversy has erupted over comments made in an interview by openly-gay fashion moguls Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana regarding the “classical” family. At this year’s Milan Fashion Week, the Italian designers revealed a celebration of motherhood featuring visibly pregnant or child-laden models. In the interview, Dolce and Gabbana stated “We oppose gay adoptions. The only family is the traditional one…No chemical offsprings and rented uterus: Life has a natural flow, there are things that should not be changed.” The couple continued with, “You are born to a mother and a father – or at least that’s how it should be. I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Rented uterus, semen chosen from a catalog.”
Immediate backlash ensued, primarily led by rocker Elton John, brandishing the hashtag #BoycottDolceGabbana and receiving vociferous support from other celebrities like Ricky Martin and Victoria Beckham. Dolce & Gabbana have since volleyed their defense in reply to Elton John who, along with husband David Furnish, is parent to twins conceived via surrogacy.
According to the 2010 census, a quarter of all gay couples in the United States are raising children. Marriage equality is constantly increasing awareness, winning more laws each day, gaining new ground for the LGBT community.
The comments made by Dolce and Gabbana are not just -ironically -completely out of fashion with the modern meaning of “family”, but also reek of hate and ignorance.
