The Surrogacy Source: Can I be on public assistance & become a gestational surrogate?

Q: I would like to apply to become a gestational surrogate and heard that I can’t do so if I am receiving state/public assistance…can you please explain this, and let me know if there is a way to still become a surrogate?

A: This is a great question, and one that we hear at The Surrogacy Source very often. As an agency it is our priority to protect and care for the well-being of our surrogates.

As a surrogate, you’re earning an income of at least $30,000 (see compensation here), meaning you won’t qualify for many forms of public assistance. We want to make sure that you’re protected from any repercussions of receiving this income in addition to public assistance. In most cases gestational surrogate applicants must agree to discontinue their assistance during their surrogate pregnancy.
