What Makes a Baby

There are lots of challenging discussions to have as you start to explore building your family. If you’re an LGBTQ identified couple, or any couple utilizing assisted reproduction, stigma and common understanding of what “traditional family building” looks like can add to these challenges. Although challenging, the stories that we tell about how our families are built are powerful to ourselves, our children, and those in our outer support network.

While we were last up in the Bay Area we ran into a copy of Cory Silverberg’s “What Makes a Baby”  book– touted as “A book for every kind of family and every kind of kid.” After a quick perusing (that turned into a complete pause to read every last word and inspect every last beautifully illustrated page) we decided that “What Makes a Baby” was indeed all it set out to be!

Beautifully illustrated by Fiona Smyth and brought to life by Cory Silverberg’s voice as a sexuality educator and writer it offered language that could hold all of the ways in which our families are growing in this day in age. Whether for your little one or for you yourself as you start to traverse the sometimes tumultuous, but always gratifying, pathway to parenthood we highly recommend “What Makes a Baby.”
