Finding a Surrogate in Michigan
A surrogate, or gestational carrier, is someone who agrees to carry a pregnancy for an individual or couple. At Fertility Source Companies, we specialize in matching well-qualified surrogates with intended parents through our exclusive matching program.
Surrogacy Laws in Michigan
In April of 2024, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the Michigan Family Protection Act, which repealed a ban that made Michigan the only state in the nation to criminalize surrogacy contracts. Overall, it better protects surrogates, parents, and children so that IPs in Michigan have the support they need to start a family.
Surrogate Costs & Fees in Michigan
The total cost of surrogacy in Michigan depends on various factors but typically ranges from $100,000 to $125,000. This price includes an initial agency fee of $30,000 and a base surrogacy fee of $65,000, which you'll pay in installments. In addition to the base fee, you'll reimburse the surrogate for other expenses, like maternity clothes and other miscellaneous costs. Learn more details about the breakdown of surrogacy costs and fees.
How Surrogates Are Screened in Michigan
At Fertility Source Companies, all surrogacy candidates undergo thorough screening by experienced professionals to ensure they are physically and psychologically prepared for every step of the surrogacy journey. They are required to undergo medical testing, mental health assessments, and background checks, among other evaluations. Additionally, our staff RN reviews their past pregnancies to confirm that there were no complications.
Surrogacy FAQs for Intended Parents
While there is no set time for how long the surrogacy process may take, IPs should plan to wait anywhere from 1-2 years. This timeline accounts for the matching process, the number of embryo transfer cycles needed to achieve pregnancy, all necessary legal services, and a full-term pregnancy.
When working with a surrogate you already know, the process can be more complicated and even more costly. However, with a surrogacy agency, you get the peace of mind of matching with a pre-screened gestational surrogate. The surrogate has been counseled on the process from start to finish, and there is a legal process in place to protect all parties involved.
The level of contact and involvement with your surrogate will be discussed as part of the surrogacy plan. Different surrogates and IPs have varying preferences. At Fertility Source Companies, we'll match you with a surrogate whose preferences align with yours. Many surrogates develop close relationships with IPs and encourage them to be involved in their pregnancy journey.
Becoming a surrogate in Michigan allows you to give the life-changing gift of a child to a couple or individual who may not be able to have one otherwise. At Fertility Source Companies, we make the surrogate process as smooth and straightforward as possible.

The Surrogacy Process
Surrogacy candidates must submit an application, medical records, and background checks. Additionally, they must undergo mental and physical health screenings before being accepted into Fertility Source Companies’ database. Once registered, gestational carriers are matched with intended parents through a virtual meeting. As part of the surrogacy journey, the potential surrogate must:
Undergo a comprehensive physical examination by IP’s chosen fertility specialist
Sign a surrogacy agreement with an attorney
Perform a series of hormonal medication self-injections in preparation for pregnancy
Undergo the embryo transfer procedure
Submit to several ultrasound and blood tests to confirm pregnancy
Meet with their local OB healthcare provider for regular pregnancy visits and delivery
Although the surrogacy process may seem overwhelming at first glance, Fertility Source Companies’ team will guide both surrogates and IPs through each step of the process. Many of our staff members have been surrogates themselves and can provide next-level support, having gone through the process first-hand. Learn more about the surrogacy process.
